In a study done in 2106, there were only three centers in Sub-Saharan Africa where one can receive an open-heart surgery procedure. Africa is a continent of 1.3 billion and makes up 16% of the world total population. The average poverty rate for sub-Saharan Africa stands at about 41 percent, and of the world's 28 poorest countries, 27 are in Sub-Saharan African all with a and average 30 percent poverty rate. This translate into a death sentence to those who cannot afford to travel outside the country for open-heart surgery.
I am proud to say that I serve on the board of Voom Foundation, a non for profit humanitarian organization that puts efforts toward changing these statistics. We focus primary on training and education and are currently focused on implementing standards based on quality into the healthcare system in Nigeria. In 2013, we restarted the open-heart program in Nigeira. To date, we lead Nigeira in open-heart surgery cases performed. We are committed to making change through education and serving the world most poor and vulnerable patients.
